Notes from Dharamshala

Posting will be light for the next four to five days, but (if you ask me) understandably so. I mean, c’mon:

  1. I will not see a Test match at a stadium with a better view for the rest of my life, and I will be a ridiculously lucky person if I turn out to be wrong about this.
  2. Dharamshala (and McLeodganj) are impossibly pretty towns
  3. … but as with every other Indian city/town that I’ve been to, so also with these: their infrastructure simply can’t keep up
  4. Better public transport would go a very long way towards ameliorating traffic in both places, and the roads would be a positive delight.
  5. Attendance for Test cricket is declining, but that is on average a mixed blessing. I cannot imagine what the streets of Dharamshala will be like during a one day match or a T20 international.
  6. Another upside of declining Test attendance – the fans that do turn up are on average that much more passionate and informed. You can (and most likely will) strike up a conversation with whoever is sitting next to you about cricket, and you will learn a fair bit.
  7. If you are coming to Dharamshala in early March, the cold will be worse than you’re expecting. This will remain true even after adjusting your expectation accordingly.
  8. The loos at the stadium were better than we expected, and by miles. Kudos to the BCCI.
  9. The food at the stadium was worse than we expected, and by miles. C’mon, BCCI.
  10. Regardless of whether or not you are a fan of cricket, go watch a match at the Dharmshala stadium. If you are a fan of the sport, try and catch a Test match.
